Proteus
HOUDINI

houdini  Devised by Mary Swan & Lee Garrett
Written & Directed by Mary Swan
 Performed by Lee Garrett
 Designed by Sam Pine
 Music by Paul Wild
 Magic by Roy Davenport

Escapologist, magician, secret agent, lover, husband, devoted son, enemy of the  establishment, Harry Houdini was all and none of these things. His life remains a mystery,  and his greatest trick remains his ability to escape interpretation, until now....

Harry Houdini was an enigma in his own time, and the mysterious circumstances of his  premature death have launched a thousand conspiracy theories ever since. The man  who believed he could return from the dead, spent the latter part of his career exposing  fake mediums and those seeking to exploit the grief of others, despite his widow's  constant attempts to contact him after his death using an intricate code...

Using Proteus' distinctive style of fusing physical performance, circus, magic and music,  Harry Houdini will be resurrected to tell his remarkable story of a truly self-made man and the myths that have made him a legend.

Created by the artistic team behind the critically acclaimed 'The Elephant Man'.

George Dillon presents
THE MAN WHO WAS HAMLET

Hamlet

The tragical, comical, romantic and utterly scandalous history of the man who was Hamlet...  not the illiterate tax-dodger of Stratford, but the real 'William Shakespeare'... Edward de Vere,  17th Earl of Oxford.
Courtier, swordsman, adventurer and poet, his story involves murder, travel, pirates, a  love-child, imprisonment in The Tower and fighting the Armada. Hailed as the best of the  secret court writers, his work suddenly stopped after the appearance of ‘Shake-speare’. So was de Vere the inspiration for Hamlet... or was he really the author?
Award-winning performer George Dillon presents his eighth solo show, with original music  by Charlotte Glasson.

CAUCASIAN CHALK CIRCLE
by Bertolt Brecht.

CCC

The second year National Certificate students present Brecht’s play of ideas which satirises  the judiciary and religious life.  Written in the aftermath of the Second World War, it asks  what kind of regime should now be chosen to run a country.  The play attacks societies’  inequality and ridicules the powerful.  Even though the play is a moving drama, at its heart  it  is a satirical comedy.  Set in the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, the play takes its  ideological cue from the prologue. After the Second World War, two groups of peasants  gather in a valley to argue over which group should claim the valley as their own. Under  the  care of the State Reconstruction Committee it is unanimously decided that the land  should go to the group who will put it to best use. In celebration of this triumph of diplomacy a singer is brought forward as entertainment; the intertwining stories of the chalk circle that are then told form the main part of the play.
